What Are Crowns and Onlays?
A crown is a custom-made cap that fits over the entire visible part of a tooth, restoring its strength, shape, and appearance — commonly used for teeth that are heavily filled, cracked, or weakened after root canal treatment.
An onlay is a more conservative option, covering only the damaged part of the tooth (including the biting surface or cusps) rather than the whole tooth, preserving more of your natural structure where a full crown isn’t necessary.

Tooth Preparation
The tooth is gently shaped under local anaesthetic to make room for the restoration.
Digital Scan or Impression
A digital scan (for same-day CEREC) or a traditional impression is taken to design your restoration.
Crown or Onlay Fitted
Same-day CEREC restorations are milled and fitted within the same visit; lab-made restorations are fitted at a follow-up appointment, with a temporary in place in the meantime.
Aftercare
Guidance on caring for your new restoration so it lasts.

Frequently Asked Questions
The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic before preparation, so you shouldn't feel pain. Some mild sensitivity afterwards is normal and settles quickly.
With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, crowns and onlays commonly last many years.
CEREC crowns are designed and milled in-practice and can be fitted the same day, in suitable cases. Lab-made crowns typically take a little longer, with a temporary crown worn in between visits, but both offer a durable, long-term result.
Brush and floss as normal, attend regular check-ups and hygiene visits, and avoid using your teeth to bite very hard foods or open packaging.
